INTERPRETER WITH A CAUSE
For six years now, I’ve been interpreting events in several areas, from workplace safety workshops to Oncology conferences.
Luckily, I have been able to devote my time and energy to giving voice to personal development projects which speak to my professional and personal values, such as Humans of New York (HONY).
I was Brandon Stanton’s interpreter, the photographer behind the lens of HONY, when he visited Rio de Janeiro during Carnival, the Brazilian popular event I love the most.
Tal Ben-Shahar AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SIMULTANEOUS TRANSLATION
Hiring conference interpreting services is much like what you’d expect from any agreement: both parties discuss service details, set and agree on working conditions, and the quote is drafted and approved.
In 2018, I was hired as an interpreter to work at the Positive Experience event (aka #POEX by those familiar with it), held by SBCoaching in São Paulo. I was in charge of giving a Brazilian voice to Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar, a specialist in Positive Psychology and a professor at Harvard Business School, also known in Brazil as “Doutor Felicidade” (Dr. Happiness).
I was supposed to interpret in two instances: during an on-stage interview with the SBCoaching chairmanship, and during his long-awaited lecture.
Altogether, these two moments accounted for less than four hours’ worth of consecutive interpreting work with notes (interview) and without notes (lecture). And to handle this “quick” mission, I had to study for about 25 hours.
Few people know: an interpreter's work starts long before the event!
FOR MY METICULOUS STUDY AND PREPARATION:
- I read Happier, the book that laid the groundwork for Ben-Shahar’s talk
- I watched all of his lectures available on YouTube
- I delved into research to learn as much as possible about his personal and professional background
- I read his interviews for both national and international media outlets
- I put together a bilingual glossary of terms about positive psychology
- I put together a glossary of symbols to use when taking notes during his interview
DOUBLE THE LEARNING FOR THOSE LISTENING TO THE INTERPRETER
I did all of that while juggling my daily tasks. I would go from studying for work-related purposes to studying for translation-related purposes, to running my business, to keeping up with household chores… Not to mention the hours of meditation to help me cope with the pressure of preparing to be on stage with an icon such as Ben-Shahar, the biggest highlight at the Positive Experience event.
Such effort is not exclusive to events involving famous speakers; on the contrary, studying hard is a standard procedure that every professional interpreter follows in preparation for an assignment. Professional interpreters study a lot to be able to use the acquired knowledge together with interpreting techniques in order to offer top-level service to our customers.
In addition to the feeling of satisfaction for spreading such transformative ideas, interpreting Professor Tal Ben-Shahar has taught me another lesson on the importance of my work. In his own words, “your presence is essential in this event because with your work, the audience has the chance to learn twice: when they hear me and when they hear you.
